Day Trips around Matrei am Brenner – Four Directions from the Farm
The strength of the location on the Brenner axis is easily explained: from Matrei am Brenner, four different worlds lie within reach of a day trip. The Stoacherhof stands in Mützens, a hamlet above the town — not in a side valley from which everything is a long drive, but in the middle. This guide sorts the region’s day-trip destinations by these four directions: the Wipptal itself, the Stubai valley from the Wipptal, Innsbruck to the north and South Tyrol beyond the Brenner.
On the doorstep: the Wipptal
The nearest thing is the most often overlooked. Around Mützens lies the Wipptal with its quiet destinations: Maria Waldrast, the highest-altitude pilgrimage monastery in Europe, whose toll road begins right here with us (around 15 minutes by car to the top). The Obernberger See at the head of the Obernbergtal, around 25 minutes’ drive plus about 20 minutes on foot. The Serles above the valley, the “Altar of Tyrol”. And the quiet side valleys of Gschnitz, Trins and Navis, where you walk without meeting a soul. A stroll to the Sill gorge with its suspension bridge below Trautson Castle takes a good 10 minutes on foot.
To the west: the Stubai valley from the Wipptal
Let us say it straight away: the Stoacherhof is not in the Stubai valley, but in the neighbouring valley. The entrance to the Stubai valley, however, is only around 10 minutes’ drive from us, via Schönberg. The Serlesbahnen in Mieders, the family mountain with its summer toboggan run, are likewise around 10 minutes away; Schlick 2000 near Fulpmes around 20 minutes. The Stubai Glacier at the head of the valley — Tyrol’s largest glacier ski area, snow-sure almost all year round — is around 45 minutes away and is therefore a whole day trip rather than a quick hop. Anyone who wants to make heavy use of the Stubai valley buys the Stubai Super Card separately: it is not included with us, because the Stoacherhof is not a Stubai partner business.
To the north: Innsbruck
The Tyrolean capital is around 25 minutes away by car — or comfortably by train, which costs nothing extra with the Wipptal Card included for our guests. Innsbruck combines an old town with the Golden Roof, museums and coffee houses with the mountains right above it: the Nordkette cable car takes you from the city into high-alpine terrain in a few minutes, and the Bergisel ski jump with its wide view stands at the edge of town. An Innsbruck day is the classic fallback outing when the weather on the mountain does not cooperate.
To the south: South Tyrol over the Brenner
The Brenner is quickly reached from here, and beyond it Italy begins. Sterzing (Vipiteno) is around 35 minutes away by car: a medieval old town with arcades, the Zwölferturm and Italian coffee — you are back in time for dinner. Further south follow Brixen and the Eisack valley. A South Tyrol day is the outing that makes a holiday in the Wipptal doubly appealing: Tyrol in the morning, Italy in the afternoon, and both without a long drive.
