Stopover on the Brenner Route – One Night That Often Turns into More

The Brenner route is the busiest Alpine crossing in Europe, and for most people it is just the stretch between Munich and the south. The Stoacherhof lies on the northern side of that route, in Mützens near Matrei am Brenner — a little above the valley floor, quiet, with a view of the Serles. This guide is for everyone who really only means to stay one night: motorists on the way to Italy and cyclists on the Munich–Lake Garda route. We build the stopover so that next time it gladly turns into more.

Arrive whenever you arrive

Anyone driving over the Brenner rarely knows their arrival time to the hour — a jam at the Inntaldreieck, roadworks, a late start. That is why we have no reception closing time: check-in runs by itself, by code, from 4.00pm, even late in the evening. Parking is free and right at the house, so you do not have to hunt for the car in an underground garage in town. Check-out is by 10.00am — early enough to carry on in the morning without rushing. And because a single night is a perfectly normal booking with us, there is no minimum stay to stand in the way of the stopover.

A kitchen instead of a service station

The real difference from a transit hotel on the motorway is the kitchen. All four apartments have a full kitchen with a dining table — you arrive, cook something simple, and the children are not still sitting in a restaurant at nine in the evening. If you are only staying one night, take the Auszeit at 55 m²; travelling with the whole family, the Panorama gives you 120 m² and three bedrooms. After a long day in the car, that is something other than a double room with an extra bed.

For cyclists on the way to Lake Garda

The Munich–Lake Garda cycle route runs through the Wipptal, and the Brenner is the high point of that route — the divide between the climb and the descent. Whoever has the pass stage ahead of or behind them needs the same as the driver: a bed without reception stress, a kitchen and a safe place for the bike. The lockable room where the skis stand in winter is the bike room in summer. That too is a reason why we ask for no minimum stay: one night on the stage is expressly welcome here.

Why one night often turns into more

We will be honest in our own cause: as a pure overnight stop we work — but we are not at the motorway exit, we sit a little above it, quiet and with a view into the valley. Anyone who steps onto the balcony in the morning and sees the Serles, the “Altar of Tyrol”, often drives on with the thought of staying next time. Innsbruck is around 25 minutes away, Sterzing in South Tyrol about 35 minutes on the southern side of the Brenner, the entrance to the Stubai valley around 10 minutes. The stopover then becomes a base for the whole region.

On in the morning without rushing

Check-out is by 10.00am — early enough for a relaxed departure, late enough not to set off in the dark. Anyone who wants breakfast has it in their own kitchen rather than at a buffet with fixed opening times; the essentials for it you get at the market in Matrei am Brenner, a short way below Mützens. For cyclists on the way to Lake Garda that means: the bike comes out of the lockable room dry and safe, the water bottles are filled, and the stage over the Brenner begins without a detour. And anyone who realises after the one night that the region offers more than a stopover simply books longer next time — a minimum stay to prevent that is something we do not have anyway.

When half a day remains

  • Sterzing / Vipiteno

A medieval South Tyrolean old town with arcades and Italian coffee, around 35 minutes by car over the Brenner — a short trip south.

  • Innsbruck

The Tyrolean capital with its old town and mountain backdrop, around 25 minutes by car or by train — for the afternoon before you move on.

  • Munich–Lake Garda cycle route

The long-distance route runs through the Wipptal; the Brenner is the high point. A safe, lockable bike room at the farm.

  • Matrei am Brenner

The historic market town on the Brenner route with shops and dining — the basic supplies for the stopover.

Frequently asked questions

Is a late-evening check-in possible?

Yes. Check-in runs by itself, by code, from 4.00pm, even on a late arrival after a long day’s drive. Check-out is by 10.00am.

Can I book just a single night?

Yes, there is no minimum stay. A single night on the way over the Brenner is a perfectly normal booking with us.

Where can I store my bicycle safely?

In the lockable room where the skis stand in winter — the bike room in summer. The Munich–Lake Garda cycle route runs through the Wipptal.

How far is it from here to South Tyrol?

Sterzing is around 35 minutes by car over the Brenner. So a short trip into Italy is doable even on a single overnight stay.
