Holiday Apartment in the Wipptal – Your Base Between Innsbruck and the Brenner
If you are looking for a holiday apartment in the Wipptal, you are usually after two things at once: peace in the mountains and short distances to everything else. That is exactly what the Stoacherhof offers. We let four apartments in Mützens, a hamlet of the market municipality of Matrei am Brenner — each with its own kitchen, its own bathroom, and enough space for a holiday for two to work just as well as one for six.
Four apartments, four sizes — a flat, not a hotel room
A holiday apartment is not a hotel room, and we do not build ours like one. Each of our four apartments has a full kitchen, its own bathroom and a living area you actually want to sit in come evening. The smallest, the Auszeit, is 55 m² with one bedroom — built for two to four people. The largest, the Panorama, is 120 m² across three bedrooms, with a 50 m² kitchen-living room and a balcony with an unobstructed view across the Wipptal; it sleeps up to six without anyone tripping over anyone else. In between sit the Ursprung at 85 m² and the Weitblick at 65 m². All apartments are non-smoking, all have fibre wifi, a smart TV and a room safe. Couples take the smaller ones; families or two couples travelling together take the Panorama or the Weitblick.
The location: half an hour from four different worlds
The Wipptal is the valley the Brenner route runs through — which is exactly what makes it such a practical base. Innsbruck is around 25 minutes away by car, or comfortably by train. In the other direction lies Sterzing in South Tyrol, about 35 minutes over the Brenner: medieval arcaded streets, Italian coffee, and you are back in time for dinner. The entrance to the Stubai valley is around 10 minutes away, and the Bergeralm ski area near Steinach about 10 minutes as well. So you are not based in one place and driving far for everything else — you are based in the middle. If you like to do something different every day of your holiday, this is a better base than any of the side valleys.
Hiking starts here without a drive
The strongest reason to book in the Wipptal rather than a large tourist resort is what begins right outside the door. The toll road to Maria Waldrast — the highest-altitude pilgrimage monastery in Europe — starts right here in Mützens; it takes around 15 minutes by car to reach the top. From there, the classic approach leads up to the Serles, the “Altar of Tyrol”, which you can see from the balcony. For quieter days, the Obernberger See (around 25 minutes’ drive plus about 20 minutes on foot) and the peaceful side valleys of Gschnitz, Trins and Navis are within reach. And some of the tours start with no drive at all: you simply set off instead of driving there first.
Self-catering, but not on your own
A holiday apartment means you cook when you want to, and nobody sets a breakfast time for you. Check-in with us is self-service, from 4.00pm, by code — even if you arrive late at night after sitting in traffic, nobody is waiting impatiently at reception. Check-out is by 10.00am. Parking is free and right at the house, and there is a lockable room for skis and bicycles. And it would not quite be a farm without one more thing: we keep our own bees, and the honey is there for guests to take home. That is the difference between an anonymous flat and a farm where someone actually lives.
What a stay costs — and what is added
Prices start, depending on apartment and season, at the “from” prices shown below; they apply per night, not per person, and are cheaper when booked directly than through the big portals. We do not require a minimum stay. Cancellation is free up to five days before arrival. To be upfront: the local tourist tax of the municipality of Matrei am Brenner is added per person and night — children under 15 are exempt. In return, the Wipptal Card is included for our guests: free travel on bus and train within the Wipptal and discounts on the ski lifts. The Stubai Super Card for the neighbouring valley is NOT included; it can be bought directly from the Stubai tourist board.
