Holiday Apartment near Sterzing – on the North Side of the Brenner
To avoid any misunderstanding: the Stoacherhof is not in Sterzing and not in South Tyrol. It is in Mützens near Matrei am Brenner, in the Austrian Wipptal — on the north side of the Brenner. Sterzing, Vipiteno in Italian, is around 35 minutes from us by car over the Brenner. For some holidays that is exactly the right distance, for others it is not. This page explains which applies to you.
Two sides of one pass
The Brenner divides Tyrol and South Tyrol, Austria and Italy. Matrei am Brenner is a historic market town on the Tyrolean side; Sterzing lies beyond the pass on the South Tyrolean side. Staying with us means staying on the same pass route, just on the other side of the border. In practice: Tyrol in the morning, Italy in the afternoon — and back in time for dinner. The drive takes around 35 minutes by car — short enough for a spontaneous half day, without having to change your accommodation.
What Sterzing offers as an excursion
Sterzing is one of the most beautiful medieval old towns in South Tyrol. The arcades of the Neustadt and the striking Zwölferturm tower shape the townscape; the centre is car-free and compact. Under the arcades you find small shops, boutiques and delicatessens, along with Italian coffee, South Tyrolean specialities such as speck and mountain cheese, and weekly markets. A cable car runs straight from the town up the Rosskopf (Monte Cavallo) — a hiking and viewpoint mountain in summer, a family-friendly ski area in winter with a long run down to Sterzing.
Why not stay in Sterzing itself?
If your holiday is mainly about South Tyrol — Sterzing every day, the Eisack valley, Brixen —, you are better off staying south of the Brenner. 35 minutes over the pass is short for an outing, but a real drive for every single day. We say this openly because a disappointed booking helps nobody. Our argument is a different one: from the Stoacherhof, Innsbruck (around 25 minutes), the entrance to the Stubai valley (around 10 minutes), the Bergeralm ski area (around 10 minutes) and Sterzing (around 35 minutes) are all within reach at the same time. If you want to explore several directions on holiday, you are better placed in the middle than at the edge.
Tyrol right behind the Brenner
Arriving from the south, you have already crossed the pass by the time you reach us. On the Tyrolean side, the destinations that, seen from Sterzing, only begin beyond the border are close by: Innsbruck with its old town and the Nordkette around 25 minutes, the Stubai Glacier — Tyrol’s largest glacier ski area — around 45 minutes. The toll road to the Maria Waldrast monastery, the starting point for the Serles, begins right here in Mützens. The Wipptal Card is included for our guests: free travel on bus and train within the Wipptal and a discount on the Bergeralm cable car. The Stubai Card, on the other hand, is not included.
Four apartments with their own kitchen
We let four self-contained holiday apartments between 55 and 120 m², not rooms. Each has a full kitchen, its own bathroom, fibre-optic Wi-Fi and a smart TV. The Auszeit (55 m², one bedroom) suits two to four people, the Weitblick (65 m²) and the Ursprung (85 m²) suit families, and the Panorama (120 m², three bedrooms) takes up to six. Check-in runs by itself via a key safe from 4.00pm, and parking right at the house is free. Prices apply per night and depend on the number of guests; the local tourist tax of the municipality of Matrei am Brenner is already included in the price shown.
