Wipptal Card or Stubai Card – Which Guest Card You Need in the Wipptal

Anyone holidaying in the Wipptal and planning trips into the Stubai valley sooner or later comes across two cards with similar names: the Wipptal Card and the Stubai Card. One you receive as a guest at the Stoacherhof at no extra cost, the other you do not. This guide explains what each card contains, who can actually buy the Stubai Card and for which holiday plans it pays off. First the essentials: the Stoacherhof lies in Mützens near Matrei am Brenner, that is in the Wipptal. For us the Stubai valley is a destination for day trips — the valley entrance via Schönberg is around 10 minutes away by car.

The Wipptal Card: included for our guests

The Wipptal Card is the guest card of the Wipptal holiday region. You receive it with your stay, at no extra cost. Its most important part is the ticket: according to the Wipptal tourist board, the card is valid all year round for the S-Bahn between Innsbruck and the Brenner (S3) and for all bus routes in the Wipptal region. With it you travel to Innsbruck without an extra ticket and by regional bus into the side valleys of Gschnitz, Navis, Obernberg, Vals and Schmirn. Taking bicycles along is not included. On top come discounts, for example at the Bergeralm cable car in Steinach, around 10 minutes from the farm by car, and free or reduced participation in the tourist board’s weekly programme, such as guided walks. The tourist board sets the discounts each season; the current list is on wipptal.at.

The Stubai Card: cable cars, buses and pools in the Stubai valley

The Stubai Card is the counterpart in the neighbouring valley, but it is not a guest card — it is a card sold by the Stubai tourist board. According to stubai.at it contains the same services as the Stubai Super Card that guests of Stubai partner businesses receive included: one return trip per day at the Stubai Glacier, on the Serlesbahnen in Mieders, at Schlick 2000 in Fulpmes and on the Elferbahnen in Neustift; free travel on the buses between Mutterberg and Innsbruck and on the Stubaitalbahn between Fulpmes and Innsbruck; plus admissions to the StuBay leisure pool and the Mieders outdoor pool and discounts with bonus partners. It can be used on five freely chosen days within seven consecutive days. For summer 2026 the Stubai tourist board states 99 euros for adults and 49.50 euros for children up to 14, with sales from 14 May to 28 October 2026 and 1 November 2026 as the last day of validity. It is sold at the tourist board offices and at the four cable car companies.

The decisive difference: who can buy the Stubai Card

This is where most misunderstandings arise. The Stoacherhof is not a Stubai partner business: the Stubai Super Card and the Stubai guest card are not available with us, and we cannot sell the Stubai Card. The Stubai tourist board describes the Stubai Card as a card for guests who do not stay at a partner business; at the same time its website states that it is available exclusively with a Stubai guest card. The Stubai guest card belongs to a stay in the Stubai valley — as a guest in the Wipptal you receive the Wipptal Card instead. Whether you can still buy the Stubai Card is therefore best clarified with the Stubai tourist board before your trip. Do not count on it until you have a confirmation: cable cars, buses and the Stubaitalbahn in the Stubai valley can also be used with regular tickets.

Which card suits whom

For most of our guests the Wipptal Card is enough. It covers the journeys most often made in the Wipptal: by S-Bahn to Innsbruck, by bus into the side valleys, plus the discounts at the Bergeralm. Anyone visiting the Stubai valley on one or two days — such as the Serlesbahnen in Mieders, around 10 minutes by car, or Schlick 2000 near Fulpmes, around 20 minutes — usually buys single tickets and compares the fares of the cable car beforehand. The Stubai Card only shows its strength if you want to ride up the mountain on several days in the Stubai valley, use the pools and take the bus or the Stubaitalbahn: pay once, use it on five days out of seven. Whether that adds up depends on how many cable car days you plan in the Stubai valley — and on whether you can get the card at all. The Stubai Glacier at the head of the valley is around 45 minutes away; that is a full day trip, not a detour.

Into the Stubai valley without a car

The Stubai valley can be reached without a car too, just not all the way on the Wipptal Card. By S-Bahn you travel to Innsbruck with the Wipptal Card; from there the Stubaitalbahn runs to Fulpmes and the bus route runs through the Stubai valley up to Mutterberg at the glacier. Both connections are part of the Stubai Card; without it you need a regular ticket. A regional bus also runs between Matrei and Schönberg at the entrance to the Stubai valley. Whether the Wipptal Card is valid on this stretch as far as Schönberg is not stated explicitly by the tourist board — if in doubt, ask when boarding. Current times are in the timetable service of the Tyrol transport association (VVT).

And in winter?

According to the Wipptal tourist board, the ticket part of the Wipptal Card is valid all year round. In winter there are also discounts in the Bergeralm ski area in certain off-peak weeks and free use of the cross-country trails in the region. The Stubai Card with the services and dates above is a summer offer; for skiing in the Stubai valley there are separate ski passes, with prices on stubai.at.
