The Stubai Valley from the Wipptal – Apartments in the Neighbouring Valley

Let us say it straight away rather than disappoint you later: the Stoacherhof is NOT in the Stubai valley. It is in the Wipptal, the neighbouring valley. The entrance to the Stubai valley is around 10 minutes’ drive from us. For many people that is actually the better choice — for some it is not. This page explains which applies to you.

How close the Stubai valley really is

From the Stoacherhof via Schönberg to the entrance of the Stubai valley is around 10 minutes by car. The Serlesbahnen in Mieders, the family mountain with its summer toboggan run, are also around 10 minutes away. Schlick 2000 near Fulpmes is about 20 minutes. The Stubai Glacier at the head of the valley — Tyrol’s largest glacier ski area, snow-sure almost all year round — is around 45 minutes away; that is the longest of these distances, and honestly a day-trip distance, not a stone’s throw.

Who the Wipptal is the better base for

If you want to do something different every day of your holiday, the Wipptal is a better base than the Stubai valley. From the Stoacherhof, four directions are within reach: the Stubai valley in around 10 minutes, Innsbruck in around 25, Sterzing and South Tyrol in about 35 minutes over the Brenner, and the Wipptal itself, with the Serles, Maria Waldrast, the Obernberger See and the quiet side valleys, right outside the door. Staying in the Stubai valley, the glacier is closer — and everything else is further away. It is a decision, not a judgement.

Who should book in the Stubai valley instead

If you want to ski exclusively at the Stubai Glacier for a week and be first at the gondola every morning, you are better off booking in the Stubai valley itself. A 45-minute drive on five consecutive days adds up to an hour and a half a day in the car. We say this openly, because a disappointed booking helps nobody. For anyone taking in the glacier on one or two days and otherwise exploring the region, the sums work out differently — and then we are the right address.

The Stubai Super Card is NOT included

One point where the wrong expectations often arise: the Stoacherhof is not a Stubai valley partner business. The Stubai guest card is therefore not available with us, and we cannot sell the Stubai Super Card at reception either. It is separate and payable — available directly from the Stubai tourist board and the ski lifts. What you do get free with us is the Wipptal Card: free travel on bus and train within the Wipptal, and discounts on the ski lifts. Anyone who wants to make heavy use of the Stubai valley buys the Super Card in addition.

Four apartments as your base

You stay in one of four apartments between 55 and 120 m², each with its own kitchen, its own bathroom and fibre wifi. For ski days there is a lockable room, used for bikes in summer; parking at the house is free, and check-in runs by code from 4.00pm. Families heading into the Stubai valley usually take the Panorama (120 m², three bedrooms, up to six people) or the Weitblick (65 m²). Prices apply per apartment and night; on top comes the local tourist tax of the municipality of Matrei am Brenner, from which children under 15 are exempt.
