Accommodation at the Bergeralm – a Ski Holiday with Your Own Kitchen
The Bergeralm near Steinach am Brenner is the Wipptal’s ski area: family-friendly, manageable in size, without the queues of the big names. From the Stoacherhof it is around 10 minutes by car. If you are looking for accommodation at the Bergeralm but do not want to sit in a hotel room, we have four apartments with a kitchen of their own and a lockable ski room.
Ten minutes to the lift — and the rest of Tyrol besides
You reach the Bergeralm in around 10 minutes, heading towards Steinach am Brenner. That is close enough to make even half a day of skiing worthwhile, and far enough that you are not staying in a ski resort in the evening. For anyone who wants more than one ski area: the Stubai Glacier, Tyrol’s largest glacier ski area and snow-sure almost all year round, is around 45 minutes away via Schönberg. Schlick 2000 near Fulpmes is about 20 minutes away, and the Serlesbahnen in Mieders around 10 minutes. A ski holiday here does not have to mean the same ski area every day.
What an apartment does better than a hotel room on a ski holiday
Wet ski gear, hungry children at half past four, and an early start the next morning — that is exactly what a holiday apartment is built for, and a hotel room is not. All four apartments have a full kitchen; you have breakfast when the lift opens, not when the buffet does. Skis and poles go into the lockable ski room, not the hallway. Parking is free and right at the house, so the car is not buried under snow at the other end of town in the morning. And check-in runs by code from 4.00pm — even if you arrive late after a long drive.
Which apartment for which ski group
For two people who mostly want quiet after a day on the slopes, the Auszeit at 55 m² with one bedroom is enough. Families take the Weitblick (65 m², two bedrooms) or the Ursprung (85 m²). Groups or two families travelling together book the Panorama: 120 m², three bedrooms, three double beds and a 50 m² kitchen-living room where everyone genuinely has a seat in the evening. This is where the price comparison with a hotel room turns around — worked out per person, the large apartment is usually the cheaper option.
When the slopes are not enough: tobogganing, ski touring, winter walking
Not every day of a winter holiday is a piste day. A toboggan run leads up to Maria Waldrast Monastery — the toll road up starts right here in Mützens, and it takes around 15 minutes by car. For ski tourers, the Wipptal has quiet, less crowded ascents; the Sattelberg on the border is a classic. And if you fancy a day without any snow at all, Innsbruck is around 25 minutes away, or Sterzing over the Brenner about 35 minutes, where winter tastes distinctly more Italian.
Prices, tourist tax and the Wipptal Card
The “from” prices below apply per night and per apartment; in winter they sit above the summer prices, which we say openly. Booked direct it is cheaper than through the portals, since their commission does not apply. There is no minimum stay; cancellation is free up to five days before arrival. Added to that is the local tourist tax of the municipality of Matrei am Brenner, per person and night — children under 15 are exempt. The Wipptal Card is included for our guests: with it you travel free on bus and train within the Wipptal and get discounts on the ski lifts.
